Review on SWA9500s
I bought this product a week ago and ran some tests initially because of negative comments suggesting that the speakers were quiet or barely audible. I paired them with the Samsung HW-Q700D soundbar and also tested them with the HW-Q800D. According to the user manual (UM), the surround speakers only produce sound in the Standard sound mode when playing 5.1 (or 7.1) and Dolby Atmos content. In the other three sound modes — Surround, Game Pro, and Adaptive — the surround speakers work even with 2.1 content. However, if you're in Standard mode and playing 2.1 content, the surround speakers remain inactive.
For music, I used the Adaptive mode with Q-Symphony enabled, and all speakers, including the rears, worked. At lower volume levels (around 7–10), the rear speakers are harder to hear; the main audio seems to come from the TV speakers and the center channel, which delivers clear dialogue. Increasing the volume to 15 or higher significantly improves the rear speakers' output, producing clear, rich sound. When standing in the center of the room, the audio blends well, making it hard to distinguish whether it originates from the front or rear speakers — perfect for creating an immersive soundstage.
Next, I tested Netflix with Dolby Atmos content, and the whole setup came to life. The rear speakers became noticeably louder compared to 2.1 content. Their output was rich and well-balanced, matching the front speakers. Cycling through the different sound modes, I found the audio natural and pleasant.
I also tested the Private Sound feature, which is useful for nighttime listening without disturbing others. I didn’t raise the volume beyond 50 because, at that level, the sound was already loud enough to fill the room comfortably.
Using the SmartThings app, I customized the speaker levels:
Center: -3 dB
Rears: +3 dB
Rear Top: +6 dB
Front Top: +6 dB
This adjustment emphasized the Atmos reflective sound. For rear speaker placement, I followed Samsung's guidelines in the UM, positioning them behind me at approximately 120° from the center line. Ideally, they should be placed at 135°–150°, but this wasn't possible in my setup.
Unfortunately, the user manual lacks details on the recommended distance or height for rear speaker placement. After researching online, I found the optimal setup:
Distance: 50–150 cm behind your head when seated.
Height:
For speakers without Atmos capability (2.0.0): 30–50 cm above ear level.
For Atmos-enabled speakers (2.0.2): at ear level or up to 25 cm above (25 cm is the upper limit).
I compared the SWA-9500S rear speakers to the rear speakers on my HW-Q990D soundbar system and found them to perform quite well. They pair best with the Q800D (for a 7.1.4 setup), but they also complement the Q700D (5.1.4), which is great considering most movies are mixed for 5.1 audio. Only top-tier titles fully utilize Dolby Atmos.
In my opinion, the proper setup of rear speakers makes a significant difference compared to using just the soundbar. The SWA-9500S makes movies much more immersive. With sound coming distinctly from behind, I found myself instinctively looking toward the side of the screen where the audio originated.
The SWA-9500S significantly enhances the HW-Q700D and HW-Q800D soundbars. If you can afford them, they are a worthwhile investment for anyone seeking a more immersive audio experience.
