A general rule of thumb is to take the BTU of a gas stove and multiply by 100. For electric stoves, calculate your ventilation power by multiplying the width in inches by 10. If your kitchen is unusually large or you cook especially pungent food, you might want a little extra CFM.

When shopping for range hoods, you can choose ones that do or do not connect to a duct. Ducted hoods vent air outside, so they are very efficient. Meanwhile, ductless hoods circulate air through a filter, so they can be installed in more locations. Most GE range hoods are ducted with the option of converting to ductless. This lets you customize your range hood to suit your individual preferences.
