The SMD2489ES Sharp Microwave Drawer features Built-In Airflow venting. Now you can choose the traditional "proud mount" installation or flush mounting for a streamlined finish without additional trim-kits or vent deflectors.
With our Easy Wave Open feature for touchless operation, simply wave up-and-down near the motion sensor and the Microwave Drawer will glide open. With the touch of a button or a gentle nudge, our patented Easy Touch Automatic Drawer System smoothly closes the oven to avoid messy spills. The SMD2489ES Sharp Microwave Drawer stays closed when you walk by, so children and pets won't accidentally open it.
The concealed, glass, Touch Control panel is easy-to-see and operate at a convenient 45° angle, keeping all of the controls at your fingertips when you need them, and completely out of sight when you don't. It’s easy to use. Stays cleaner because removing the heated containers from the drawer is easier and safer than from an eye level microwave.

Can't tell you how wonderful this item is. The drawer feature makes access much easier. Also, there is no rotating turntable inside to clean and it heats extremely well. Highly recommend. Love it!!!

Great choice!
I love the sleek design, accessibility and multiple functions of the microwave drawer! Having it under a countertop relieves the kitchen of clutter. The drawer’s ease of use is refreshing; and it gives good results based on the suggested cooking programs. I did find that the automatic open function initiated by a hand wave was overly sensitive - when I moved around quickly in front of the drawer - like opening the refrigerator door which sits across the “galley” from it - it would open without a hand wave.

Love our Sharp!
Always liked Sharp products. My Brother used to train Whirlpools Service Techs. He said I couldn't go wrong with a Sharp. I had one at my previous residence for 27 years and never had to have it serviced. My only compliant with this one is there are no lights on the control panel.

The width of my cabinet is 24" and the cabinet maker says the microwave drawer has to be standard mount. I noticed comments from people who complain that the sides of the SMD2489ES in standard mount look unfinished. Is that correct?
Yes, that's correct. It does look unfinished if you do a standard mount. There is no trim on the outer side portion, so if you do a standard mount, it looks as if you have to stare into the cavity from the sides. After getting this same unit installed in a standard way, i realized that this unit was meant to be installed as a flush mount (there's a good youtube video showing the differences between two models, and in this video, the narrator explains). Now, we need to remove it, cut the cabinet out a little more and reinstall with molding around the edges because our contractor said that it would look bad without a trim kit.

Control panel/drawer isn’t closing properly. When open, pressing "close" causes it to get stuck. We must close it manually. Microwave is approx 3 years old. This was an expensive appliance, and this issue shouldn't occur. Please assist.
The problem appears to be the limit switches on the drawer. We had the same thing happen. Ours was under warranty. Appliance repairman didn't have to replace the switches, just adjusted the switches.
Occasionally we would close the door manually. He said we shouldn't do that because it could mess up the limit switches. We only close it now with the "open/close" button. No problem since repair.

Is the control panel backlit so it’s easy to read at night?
Yes, but it must be left "open" meaning the top control panel tilts down at an angle. We leave ours tilted open most of the time. When pushed closed, the only thing you see is the silver bar panel.
