Big Sound Upgrade for a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

A customer came into the Eatontown, NJ Installation Center to upgrade a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee. He paid the dealership a lot extra for the premium stereo system, but it didn't live up to his expectations. So, he came to us looking to see how it can be improved.

There was a factory amplifier and subwoofer built into the rear cargo area, but it lacked power and musical impact. The customer could turn the volume to the max, but it didn't reach the level the customer was hoping for.

The factory radio is a touch screen with navigation, Bluetooth, and back-up camera, so he didn't want to replace that. Understanding his needs, our mobile installer, Rich, guided him to equipment that would make the audio system crank.

The customer went big with upgrades. He chose Alpine SPR60C component speakers for the front, SPR60 coaxial speakers in the rear, and the Alpine MRVF300 4-channel 300-watt amplifier to power them. The Alpine MRVM500 monoblock 500-watt amplifier was chosen for a ported subwoofer box.

The Installation

Amps installed in hatch area of Jeep Cherokee

Our mobile installer went to work, transforming the bland system into an audio beast. First, he removed the door panels and installed the new speakers. Then, he removed the rear interior trim panels and built-in factory subwoofer enclosure.

After exposing the inner panel, he saw plenty of space for the new amplifiers, concealing them completely.

The next step was building a custom panel to mount the amplifiers. The subwoofer location offered a flat surface, plus had factory bolts to attach the new panel. A template was made, and a duplicate of the area was formed out of «" MDF, carpeted and secured using the existing bolts.

Next, wires were run from the old amplifiers and routed to the Alpine amps. Following the factory harness, Rich was able to achieve neat, seamless integration through his precision and skill.

After tuning the amps for clarity and volume, the interior panels were replaced, leaving a soft blue glow shining through the subwoofer grill.

The ported sub box with dual 10" subwoofers was dropped into place, and it was time to show off the system. The customer was astonished by the sound quality and clarity of the Alpine speakers. There was plenty of volume, and the deep, powerful bass from the sub box created an immersive sound that could be felt. It was a huge upgrade costing much less than the dealership option, but sounding much better.
